3 hr. glucose test anyone? Empty 3 hr. glucose test anyone?

Post  Cheirogloss Fri Dec 19, 2008 1:35 pm

My midwife called this morning to let me know I failed the first gest. diabetes test by 6 points and am now signed up for the 3 hr. The sucky part (aside from failing the first test) is that I must stay at the clinic for all 3 hrs of the second test. So, I fast for 8 hrs, show up at 8:15 am, and stay there so they can draw my blood every three hours. They told me that I need to stay there because physical activity could mess with the results of the second test.

I was wondering if anyone else was "held captive" for their 3 hr. test? If so, what did you bring with you to do? I was thinking a book, cards, a board game. There is a sort of library/ sitting area where DH and I could hang out. Its kind of funny, I could blow 3 hrs easily doing a dozen different things, but now that I am required to stay put at the clinic I am at a loss. Any ideas are much appreciated Smile

Sorry to hear about the glucose test and having to do the second round. 3 hours seems like a long time when you're forced into it. Perhaps you could bring thank you cards to pre-address for the post-holiday gratitude? You could also bring pen and paper and work on writing out your birth plan (if you haven't already). I just finished crocheting a blanket for Lily, and if you knit or crochet, you could easily make a little hat in that time. Good luck and I hope the second test brings good news!

Both of my 3 hour tests, I had to stay there. Not only did they not want any physical activity, they also wanted to make sure I didn't cheat and eat anything in that time frame.

I took a book and got a lot read! Since dh will be with you, a card game is a good idea.

Forgive my blonde-ness here.. but how do you cheat by eating something?? Do foods make you process sugar faster or what? Sorry, I just really don't know!

The blood tests at hourly intervals track how your body is handling the excess glucose/sugar. It has to fall below certain levels each hour in order to pass your test. If you cheat and eat during the duration of this test then the blood sugar results won't be accurate.

Not a blonde question!
