How long until you put the baby in its own room?
My husband and I were discussing this last night. I have a moses basket for the baby to stay in our room at first- but how long should the baby stay in my room before she goes into the crib?

You will likely get opinions all over the board on this one...I have a friend whose 3 year old is STILL in their bed with them...
Olivia was in her Co-Sleeper next to our bed for the first 2 months, we waited until she was REALLY sleeping through the night before we moved her, just because it was easier on us to not have to walk down the hall, etc. Some people have a hard time sleeping with them right next to them, because they move around a lot and are NOT quiet sleepers (usually) so a lot of Mom's move them to their cribs so they can sleep better We are planning on the same schedule with Avery, move her when she starts sleeping really well and not eating during the night, every baby is different, but I am hoping its on or before the 2 month mark again.

I agree with Leigha on this one.. It really depends on what is going to fit within your schedule and the babies. All our kids have slept in our room since day one. Grayson had his own room for the first year but then rooms became fewer so he is our room now. He will stay in our room for at least another year because his joint room is across the house, upstairs. Too far away for our liking. So we will be sharing our room with 2 babies. Oh well.. it wont last forever. We have always been the attached parenting type of people anyway. You and dh will figure out what works best for you both and you lo.

Rylan was in our room i believe for the first 2 months...maybe 2.5 then he started sleeping better so we moved him.

Our PLAN ( I say plan very cautiously, because I am a first timer, so who knows how it will actually go) is to have her in our room (in her bassinet) for about 6 weeks.. then try to start to introduce her to her own room & crib before I go back to work.
We shall see how it plays out!

Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
yes, I also agree, every baby is different and every family is different.
I loved sleeping with my LO's -- some people feel it is unsafe, and I agree at times maybe it is.
Mason co'slept with us, he didn't sleep very well through the night at first. And I breastfeed so and I'm sure some Momma's on here will agree, it is so much easier when u r so tired to just cuddle baby and have baby in the side- laying position to nurse.
We got used to that.
So he was almost in our bed for a year. there were times when he would be in his crib part of the night,
But I had a bassinet in our room for the 1st 3-4 months. I'm not saying he slept in it a whole lot.
But now, he can't sleep with us (he's 20 months) he can't fall asleep, so He's in his crib! which is great!!!! my ds#2 would wake up and come in our bed at all hours of the night untill he was 6. I never minded much till I was preggo with #2 and then it became too much. he stopped -
but I would suggest to get the baby to sleep on her own, at an early age. if u want ur nights to urself:)

Oh and my kids never sleep through the night.. Grayson still wakes up! My cousin who has a 15mth old, never slept with her a day in that babys life.. still doesnt sleep through the night.. my friend who did the surrogate pg who had triplet girls they are all a year old sleep through the night... i am never that lucky
Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
I agree that every family and child is different. I don't think there's a "right" way, but you'll find what works best for you and your LO. Ava slept in our room for the first two months. We finally moved her because none of us were getting any sleep. As SOON as we moved her to her own crib, she started sleeping through the night. I think WE may have actually been disturbing HER
Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
our plan is to keep him in our room until he can sleep through most of the night. I would say that should be between 2-3 months.. We live in a apartment so its not a huge walk for us once he IS in his room if he wakes up but everyone told me 2-3 months is all the time they need to be near u..

Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
First I will say that my children never slept through the night till they got in there "big" beds. So Dylan just started right before his second birthday.
Anyway we have a pac-n-play with the bassinet on top. They sleep in there till they get to big for it. I use there cribs during the day so they are use to it.
Also bad mother here when my child will not sleep I have done the following:bouncer seat, swing, my boob.

Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
OK, my son is 3 yo and still sleeps in bed with us!
My son had his own room with a cool lightning mcqueen theme, and carbed and he never used it. My DH converted his room into an office. I hate to admit it but I love having my son in bed with me, he will be 4 in March...so I think he really needs his own space. DH loves having our son in bed I think moreso than me...son is a Daddy's boy...and cries for him at night (my DH stays up late most nights doing work in his office). DH loves to cuddle with my little man.
With this LO, I am going to go to the opposite extreme and not bring her in the bed with me at all.
I honestly miss sharing my bed just with my husband.
People often ask "How did you two get pregnant if your son sleeps in the bed with you two!" Whose to say the bedroom is the only place people have sex?

Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
With my first I kept him in my room until he was sleeping through the night. I think he was about 5-6 weeks old. My youngest, however, stayed in my room until he was 4 because of his medical needs. He was on oxygen, IV pump, pulse-ox monitor and a feeding pump. He actually slept in his bassinet for 9 months because he was so tiny!
With Abby I plan to move her to her room when she sleeps through the night just like I did with Travis.

Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
If I had things go the way I'd prefer, I will put our son in his crib from the start. His room is RIGHT next to ours so hearing him or getting up with him would be almost the same as if he was in our room. I am, however, realistic and know that I might just not be able to part with him that easily. I plan to have a pack n' play with a bassinet insert in our bedroom so if we choose to keep him in the room he'll have his own space to sleep. I plan to play it by ear and do whatever works best for us as a family, no matter what idea's I have before he's born.

First timer question: if baby is in your room (my plan) and breastfeeds in the night, don't you have to get up anyway to change diapers? i'm thinking you have to change them every time they wake up to eat? planning to cloth diaper my LO, so have to change more because of that, too, I think?
yes, i am clueless...

We are going to have ours in the pack and play bassinet for about a month or so, then gradually move her to her crib. That is the "plan" anyway!! Who knows what will actually happen!

Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
GSDMommy - the best advice my Pediatrician gave me was....ONLY change the diaper during the night IF they poop, if you change it with every feeding you will likely stimulate them too much and they won't nod back off as quickly as you would like. This helped us a lot, I was changing her with every feeding until she told me this at her 2W check up. Also, I have heard that with BF LO's you are likely to have a Poop with every single feeding, because it goes through them so quickly, compared to Formula, but I can't speak from experience on that one, just what I have heard.
However with cloth diapers I am not so sure, I don't know that works...never used them.

Savanna is still in our room at 3 1/2. She sleeps in her toddler bed next to our bed. The baby will be in a bassinett in our room for awhile. I hope to not have a little one in our room for the next 3 or so years, so we will see.

We co-slept with our son and couldn't get him out of our room until he was 5 years old. I love sleeping with him and up until now we were ok with it because it was just him. Now that we will have another child I will probably not keep him in the room as long. Once I get over watching the baby to make sure that he is alive all night I will move him to his room. I have a twin bed in there that I am sure I will be using a lot. Someday I will share a bed with my husband again.

You would only change diapers if they woke up to be changed/fed. And yes.. you have to change many diapers at night. Mine typically eat every 2 hrs.. hense.. diaper changes.. i try to change the diaper before the second breast. The first breast helps them poop.. yup every feeding in the beginning.. the second breast puts them back to sleep Count on 10-12 diapers a day.. if your CD it may be more. Breast fed babies poop a ton.. it does slow down to like once or twice a week.. which is great!
Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
Great advice April! I never noticed the 1st breast poop/2nd breast sleep pattern with DD since we only BF for the first 6 weeks (she ended up being allergic). I'm planning on trying with Owen though and I think your system will help! Thanks!

Allergic? I never understood how a baby can be allergic to breastmilk. Its what we eat is what they are allergic to. Almost all my kids were allergic to me eating or drinking.. milk, eggs, and soy. I typically had to stop eating/drinking those 3 things for the first 6/7 mths then after that it was okay. I knew they were because they would spit up more often then normal and extra crankiness. We used to give them 1/2 tablet of Prevacid.. that always worked. But i stuck to my diet. Maybe with Owen if you notice the same issues.. you can try a lactation specialist to help.. My sons gastro specialist was a great help with me. I hope your able to b/f Owen much longer.

Yeah, they said it was pretty rare. She's REALLY allergic to all milk products though and had severe acid reflux for the first 6 months. I'll never forget when she was 4 days old watching as milk poured out of her mouth and nose at the same time. Freaked me out!!! She had such panic in her poor little eyes. Also, because she was over 9 lbs at birth, they were having me supplement her with formula (as well as bf every 2 hours). We never got to the point of bf and giving soy formula though. That may have worked. It was all such a blur. I worked with a lactation specialist and never had any problems with her latching or my milk coming in and did everything they said with my diet. I don't know. I do know that I'll be a lot more relaxed with Owen and just go with whatever works best for him. I feel like I put too much pressure on myself with her.
Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
I don't remember having to change many diapers in the middle of the night. Like Lgtwifey, said only if they need to be changed, like poopy diaper or if they are very wet/ soaked.
and I did BF, but he may have just gotten all his poop out during the day.

Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
What I've done with all the others was to have dh change the diaper while I went pee and got a quick drink. That gave me a few minutes to do those things, without leaving baby to cry in the crib. Plus, I'd be comfortable, too. Then I'd take baby and nurse until they fell back asleep and then we put them back into the crib.

Re: How long until you put the baby in its own room?
Karen - that is a great point. I always would start feeding Olivia and then had a HUGE urg to pee, and would have to pass her off or do the little pee pee dance around the room, it was torture, so I need to remember to PEE first before I attempt to feed this little one.
I have that issue now, when Olivia wakes up, I always make myself pee before I go get her out of her crib because I know I won't be able to hold it while I am getting her changed and dressed.
