Sorry to hear that. When I was working at the school I was paying a stay-at home mom to watch my boys, well just dakota because Brock was in head start. BUT... she wanted me to pay for the week of Thanksgiving break and the two weeks for Christmas break. I didn't have to work and she was going to be out of state these weeks anyways!! I was like "what the hell?!" Well Brock started have some problems and Dakota got bad sick and was sick for almost 3 weeks. I had to quit working and go back to staying at home, but I was PISSED that she wanted me to pay for them weeks. I ended up quiting the week before Thanksgiving break.

I am an in home day care provider and I can't believe that she is telling you now that she is taking the summer off! She is providing a service to working parents. Not everyone's schedules are the same. You don't need this extra worry right now. Hopefully she will change her mind about closing for the summer and watching your baby for you.

For you First Time Mommies out there, just a warning, day care stresses me out to no end.

Shannon I wish you lived here and could watch Olivia and Avery.

I just worry about Olivia so much, BUT, Olivia is madly in love with our daycare lady, Donna. Donna and her husband John have been doing this in their home for 20+ years, never take "sick" days, but get 2 Weeks of Paid Vacation and lots of Holidays Off. I can't blame them, its their income, its their full time jobs, its the norm here for in home daycare to get paid vacation, etc. And of course I have to pay when Olivia is home sick with me.

They keep 10 children right now, they are allowed 32 "Points" and sometimes in the afternoons when I pick up Olivia, John has already left, gone to the store or whatever, I feel like he should be there the whole time when the kids are there, that is why they are allowed to keep so many children, because two of them are there. I have arrived to pick up Olivia and she was still in a chair in the kitchen eating a snack and Donna is in the other room changing another kid, clearly can't see Olivia, is 3 rooms away, what if Olivia choked? It just worries me. But Olivia is so happy there, she loves Donna, sometimes doesn't want to come home, etc. And she loves the other kids, oddly enough her best friend at daycare is Avery, funny huh. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I had to get on the "list" to ensure she would have a spot for Avery, because she is always full, she will have a spot for Avery in May, so that works out well.

The only thing I can say is, if she really is going to take the summer off, at least she is giving you several months notice, sometimes you can find summer programs for kids, but I really can't believe she would do that and just not expect it to be an issue for you.

Good luck! I hope it works out!!!!!

I work in a child care center we have an Infant /toddler program, Preschool, Kindergarten, and school age (I work in School age) so as for home day care I have little to say. but with most centers they have to abide by certain standards that are often set by the state and by their accrediting body, like being open for a certain amount of days a year, and having small teacher child ratios. there is a benefit if you would like to switch to a center, but make sure that they are licensed by the state and that they are NAYC accredited or hold some type of accreditation for preschool and Infant toddler programs.

Great advice Marie!

That is what made me decide to enroll my son in a center instead of a home. I loved the idea of a home daycare, but everytime I called several in my area and asked about holidays and summer hours, all of them were away and gone weeks at a time. I work year around and needed something that was more reliable and consistent, so I decided on a center that is NAEYC accredited and highly rated and highly recommended to me. It does cost more than a home daycare, but I would rather pay more money for peace of mind.
