Baby Owen is here!

Well ladies, he's here! Owen David Zopf was born at 10:25 am, weighing 9 lbs, 4 oz (born vaginally) and 21 1/2 inches! Here's my short labor story - I was admitted last night at 9:00. Had a mostly uneventful night until around 4:00 am when I started to have some pretty good contractions on my own. At 5:00 am they offered me an enima, which I refused. At 6:10 am they started Pitocin. At 7:15 am I was measuring 5 cm and decided on my epidural. Doctor came in right after and broke my water. At 9:55 am I was measuring 8 cm and he was -1, 100% efaced. At 10:10 am I said I was feeling pressure so she checked me and I was a full 10 cm and ready to go. I was SO ready to go actually that she couldn't risk turning me from my side to my back for fear that he may come out. They got me on the peddles, doctor came in, he said push and after 1 and 1/2 contractions (4 pushes), there was baby Owen. I know, it's not fair that it only took 4 hours from start to finish! He's a big, healthy baby boy and I couldn't be happier! Ava is doing GREAT with him and I have some beautiful pictures of them together. Breastfeeding is going well so far...he latched on within the first hour for 15 minutes on one side and about 10 on the other. So far he's eating about every 3 hours, but now it's starting to stretch to 4. The nurse said that's ok as long as he doesn't go past 6 hours. April, does that sound right?

As for nursing.. you had the epi.. it might make him tired and not want to nurse. All you can do is try to wake him and encourage him.. but if he wont wake.. theres nothing more you can do. As long as his sugars are fine, no signs of shaking would be an indicator of low sugar levels.. he should be good. Grayson nursed after birth, but not again till he was 12hrs old. The nurses had a fit! My lact counselor said that was just fine!

I get so emotional with these announcements! Congratulations, Wendy. He's amazing, and I'm really glad your labor was short and to the point. What a happy day!!
