NT Results
I just got a call from my OB with results from my NT testing...
Risk for Down's Syndrome: 1/10,000
Risk for Trisomy 18: 1/10,000
Risk for Neural Tube Defect (Spina Bifida) 1/4,600
She said these were prefect and I should have nothing to worry about. I can relax now!

Re: NT Results
Congratulations! Sometimes I think that these tests cause un-needed worry, but it is so nice when they give you reassurance!
Re: NT Results
So my OB didn't give me all those digits, she just told me...you have the same risk as a 20 year old so you are good to go....UMMMMMMMM. I guess I should have asked what that really meant...huh? Do any of you know where I can find those numbers out, maybe online?
Re: NT Results
here's one source I just found for Downs Syndrome ratios by age... it's from the UK, and the numbers don't align exactly with what the nurse told me, but close...
http://www.diagnosticultrasound.org.uk/nuchal_translucency.htm
the table down toward the bottom of the page shows age in left column and risk for Downs @ 12 weeks in middle column -- put a 1/ in front of the number for the ratio.
on my screening, for example, nurse told me that the base risk at my age -- 38 -- is 1/66 and my result was 1/510, so that was a good result. on the UK chart it says base risk for age 38 is 1/98 instead of 1/66.

Re: NT Results
So it looks like the best you can get based on this chart is 20 years old with a risk of 1/898, that seems far off from the OP, who said her risk is 1/10,000?
Re: NT Results
The numbers on the table mean that the average risk for a 20 year old is 1/898. What the result of the screening tells you when odds are 1/10,000 is that you are in a much better position than the average 20 year old for having a baby without Downs. So that's why it's a good number and a very good result.
Before the screening test was available, the only thing you would know is what the average risk is at your age... so for me, that would be 1/66 (or 1/98 according to the UK chart) for Downs, so that's why amnio's were standard procedure for women 35+ before NT screening was available. Now we can make a better informed decision on whether or not to do invasive testing, CVS and amnio, both of which have risk of miscarriage. I am happy to have more information - my number for Downs is 1/510 - and be able to say no, I'm not taking the risk of invasive testing to confirm my baby is healthy... the NT screening odds are in my baby's favor of no chromosomal problems, and I don't want to risk m/c to confirm he is healthy.
