Nurse just called....prayers please!

Well the OB nurse just called and said they got my AFP screen test results and it came back with a slight marker for Downs. I know these tests are not reliable and are non-diagnostic...but it is still a bit frightening. The specialist that I was going to anyway for consult will be looking for hard markers during the level 2 u/s that she's doing. Hopefully they call me soon with my appointment! If you pray, please remember us in your prayers.

You will be in my thoughts. Keep in mind those tests are notoriously wrong. Try to stay positive.

I will keep you in my thoughts as well, but as pp said they are wrong a lot of times so try to remember that too.

Hugs i know how hard these phone calls are to take. I will surely be thinking of you and praying for a healthy outcome.

Back in 2004 we received the same phone call. We were told that u/s showed that our baby could have trism 18 or 21. Then we were told there were larger cysts on the brain then they wanted. All said and done and lots of u/s later.. we got a healthy very intelligent baby boy!

The nurse said my risk is 1 in 250 for downs. I'm not sure what my "normal" risk factor was. I have looked it up, and just to stay positive, I have read that false markers for downs is highest in female babies. I turn 17 weeks this week.

I have an appointment with the perinatologist Oct 9th at 7:45 in the morning. I guess we will be finding out if baby is healthy.....and if it is pink or blue!

I was also told that my baby had trism 18. I was told that my baby would not live a year and if he did would have numerous complications. Well, after another ultrasound, what ever was in the brain disapeared. Our son is 6 now and totally fine. This pregnancy I have chosen not to have ANY tests taken. I am 38 and my chances for my baby having Down's Syndrome have increased. I just can't go through what I went through before. The tests are there for a good reason, but sometimes give you a false positive. I am ready for however my baby comes to me.

My DD had a cyst in her brain at the 20W U/S (but they never told us), we found out at our 22W U/S when our OB told us that the cyst was gone...my reaction was clearly "WHAT CYST?", but she went on to explain that its normal to see a cyst at any given time in the brain as its developing, they watch to make sure another one doesn't appear or that the existing one doesn't get larger, most of the time my OB said they just go away on their own.

I went to the OB today. He settled my fears somewhat. I am ready for the 9th to get here already!!! It was pretty funny at the OB's office because he was asking me about movement and I told him we moved from flutters to full blown kicks. Just at that time he placed the doppler on my belly to hear the heartbeat and the baby kicked him. LOL Thank you for your support ladies!!!

glad the doctor made you feel a bit better. even at 1/250 odds, you have 249/250 odds of a healthy baby, so that is one way to look at it until the 9th.

how old are you? the base ratios get smaller with age, that is, the odds for Downs increase when you are older.

i am hoping for the best for you and your little one.

I am 32. I'm not sure if it matters in the risk factors, but this is an IVF baby.
