Leg Cramps
I know there was a post on this before but I am lazy and I couldnt find it. I have been getting aweful leg cramps in my right calf at night. They are so bad my calf is sore the WHOLE day. Is this normal? I read somewhere it might be a sign of a blood clot which has gotten me all worried but the pain isnt unbearable during the day. It just feels like I strained a muscle? Should I call my doc or not worry about it? (I dont want to be one of those people that calls the Dr every time I feel a little pain)

Re: Leg Cramps
I had one a few weeks ago and my calf was sore for like 3 or 4 days!!!!!! It totally sucked, everytime I walked I was in pain. It eventually went away. I've had a few prego friends tell me that its normal during pregnancy to get those. Just another wonderful symptom of motherhood...lol. But if your really worried about it or you get them alot then definitely call your doctor to ease your mind!
Re: Leg Cramps
Unfortunately these are normal during pg. I can't remember which, but I've read to increase either calcium or potassium (drink milk before bed or else eat a banana).

I get them too. They hurt really bad and then my leg hurts for the next couple of days. I eat bananas to help. Good Luck, I hope the saltines work for you.

Re: Leg Cramps
I dont get them anymore because i guess i have figured out how to avoid them. I do eat banana's though. I did hear potassium helps. But I dont stretch with my foot extended, i bend my foot upwards then stretch. But i remember in the past pg's i used to get them all the time. I would jump out of bed screaming, dh not knowing what to do for me, i feel sorry for those who are getting them now.

I do the same. I learned the hard way though. I always called it "my calf muscle sticking".. I would wake up screaming... and be in pain for 2-3 days when I walked... but like April said, I learned to switch the position of my foot before stretching. Sometimes, I catch myself JUST in time and fling my foot back up and I barely miss getting the "stuck calf muscle."
Good luck!!

Re: Leg Cramps
Ask your OB about Super Shots, its extra Potassium, and strips your body of extra sodium...not sure we can take them, but I am going to ask, will help wtih retaining water, etc.
Re: Leg Cramps
I was going to post if anyone has an excess of water retention. My legs are pretty swollen right now. Even dh agrees its not fat. I am not sure how to get rid of it. Any suggestions?
Re: Leg Cramps
I have not had any swelling yet. I was terribly swollen my first pregnancy and it didn't go away until my son was 3 months old. I am just waiting to see what will happen this time.

Re: Leg Cramps
I was going to ask the same thing, my fingers feel like sausages, its gross. And I have gained almost 5 pounds in the last 2 days, how is that possible? Jeesh.
Re: Leg Cramps
I was getting the cramps in my right calf as well and then the pain would last for a couple days too. I called my DR becasue with DS I would just eat a banana but I don't like bananas this time around and he increased my calcium intake and it worked!! I take 500mg in the morning and 500mg at night before bed, he also advised me to drink orange juice a couple times a day and knock on wood but I haven't had anymore problems. He did say that the baby is taking all of what you have because she is growing her bones so if she takes it all and your body isn't getting any than this is what will happen. YIKES!! Good luck ladies, these don't feel good.

Everything I read (i dont have experience first hand) is that when you get bloated you should check your salt intake... it seems crazy but if you look at the packages of food you are eating or look up fast food online you will be amazed at how much sodium the industry puts in food! Over 1000 mg in one single item! I have been checking labels religiously to make sure I am not eating too much sodium and I drink TONS of water a day.

Re: Leg Cramps
I have gotten these dang cramps for years. Like others mentioned eating bananas helps, but I too am allergic to them. (does banana bread count?) I used to get them sometimes one in each leg throughout the night. And jumping out of bed screaming is soooo me. I have almost gotten them a couple times these last 3 weeks or so, and somehow manage to relax before they kick in full force. And yes, talk about sore for days and days, especially when both calves are sore:( Seems like they want to happen when I try to stretch out. So I have been avoiding stretching. Hope they all get better for you ladies!

Re: Leg Cramps
This happened to me last night for the first time. I sat straight up in bed in terrible pain. There was knot the size of a golfball in my calf. I am so glad I had read this thread..because I would have freaked out if I didnt know about this in advance.
