So I was just about to register for SparkPeople.com to get a plan in place for after the baby is born (Diet Wise) and I checked on my profile that I was pregnant or breastfeeding, so it redirected me to BabyFit.com. I haven't done much digging on the website yet but I wanted to pass it along so you ladies could take a look.

And I am watching Oprah from Monday (Working from home today, so catching up on TV) and I am hearing them talk about the Best Life Diet, it was ranked #1 Diet in 2007 by Consumer Reports and I am reading about it online. Has anyone heard about it?

Its tough being pregnant in January, its when everyone is focused on eating better and diets and exercise...

Cool! I used to use SparkPeople until I was diagnosed with PCOS and put on a strict diet/exercise program by my doctor. I'll have to give babyfit a try! Thanks for posting!

Wendy, there are pcos groups on sparkpeople. I haven't been to sparkpeople since about 6 mos before becoming pg. I have pcos, too. There were a few pcos groups I checked out when I was there though.

I had no idea that PCOS required different diet and exercise. My BF's Doc suspects she has it, but says they can't confirm until she is off the pill for 6 months, because the pill masks it. What should she be doing?

I saw Oprah and plan to go on her site today. I also watch the Biggest Loser which is really inspiring. It is hard to watch everyone getting on the exercise/diet trend when we are all going the opposite way on the scale.

I will check it out. I don't plan to diet per se, but I am anxious to start exercising. I used to weight train and that did wonders for me, but with a high risk pregnancy I was put on bedrest with no exercise! As soon as the weather warms up where I can take Abigail out I plan to walk, walk, walk!

LGT - Insulin Resistence (which I have) is normally a part of PCOS and caused me to gain, gain, gain no matter how much I exercised or what diets I'd try. I only lost 5 pounds after 16 weeks on Weight Watchers (and I DIDN'T cheat!) My doctor (a reproductive endo) sent me to a nutritionist who put me on a strict, specialized diet. Mainly, it's high fiber, low carbs, low sugar. My sister also has insulin resistence and her doctor put her on the glycemic index diet. It's all about balance too. For instance, I could eat an apple if I had a piece of cheese or some peanut butter with it. I was exercising (mainly walking) 5-6 days a week where I had to burn a certain number of cal per workout (Can't remember how many...pregnancy brain!). I was also on Metformin. My doctor explained that to get healthy, I had to look at my health plan as a 3-legged stool. Diet, exercise and medication. If I removed one of the "legs" it wouldn't work. Within 2 months, I'd lost almost 40 pounds and felt GREAT! I was pregnant 4 months after being diagnosed and starting the program. Please tell your friend to not give up hope!

Karen - I must have missed the PCOS groups! I'll definitely look back into sparkpeople after Owen gets here. I don't want to go through what I did with DD! Thanks!!!!!

Yup, my friend knew about the Insulin Resistence stuff, I just e-mailed her after I read this, and while she doesn't seem to have that issue just yet, she is planning on talking to her Doc about it.

Does PCOS increase your risk for GD?

Yes, it definitely increases the risk for gd. Plus, she is at a higher risk to develop type 2 diabetes later on. These are just 2 of the lovely things we get to look forward to with pcos.

She is super concerned about her weight and health, she barely eats any carbs...

She has read that PCOS can impact getting pregnant...but since she hasn't been off the pill she hasn't been diagnosed with it yet.

Here's a list of things that go along with pcos. Not everybody gets everything, it varies person to person.

insulin resistance
type 2 diabetes
weight gain
inability to lose weight with normal diet & exercise
extra hair (facial, arms, etc)
acne
infertility
lack of normal menstrual cycles (may only get a few a year)
ovarian cysts
increased risk of m/c

When I wanted to have children, they weren't using metformin as an aid for pcos to ttc. I had to go thru the RE and have lots of tests done, take clomid (didn't work for me as both times I got a bfp with it I lost them to m/c), take fertility shots, and IUI. This is how I conceived my first 2 children. After my body was shown what to do, I guess it caught on pretty quickly for # 3 and 4. This pg was after 4 years of unprotected sex, 1 m/c, and 1 month of metformin.
