Mine was negative. I am still not understanding how you even get GBS. All I know is that you have to take antibiotics before delivering. I don't think that it is a huge deal. Seven years ago when I had my son they did not even test for it.

Re: Group B Test
Its a bacteria that you can carry and I too am not sure how you really get it. My sister had her baby 4 yrs ago and they didn't check her either. Mine was negative. I do know from what I have read that it can create problems for the baby if you do not receive the antibiotics during delivery.
Karen had it with one of her babies. She can probably give you more info about it.

Re: Group B Test
Just got tested yesterday so I don't know yet, but I don't think it's anything to worry about. Just make sure you get to the hospital in time for them to give you two rounds of antibiotics
Re: Group B Test
With my 1st, they didn't test. With my 2nd, I tested + so I got antibiotics in the IV during labor. Ever since then, they just go with marking me + without testing.
With my 2nd, I got to the hospital in active labor and they only had time to push one bag of antibiotics thru and they did it in half the normal time. I was told that as long as one bag makes it in, you are fine. They prefer two bags, though. With my 3rd and 4th, I was induced, so I got two bags each time.
If you don't get the antibiotics, it could result in infections or menengitis in the baby. It will be in your chart, but you need to remind the nurses anyways when you get to the hospital.

Re: Group B Test
Yuk sorry about the positive. Its really not that bad unless you were totally against the IV part. I requested NO IV's so i was happy to test neg. You will be good!
Re: Group B Test
Thanks everyone! I just read up on it some and I guess I don't have to worry to much. Just gotta be sure to get to the hospital with enough time. It kinda makes me want to talk to the doc about induction...just to be super safe.

Re: Group B Test
I think I'm remembering that GBS is just something you carry, not really something you "catch." I guess good news/bad news is that since you're positive, it's very unlikely they'll send you home in early labor if you get to the hospital too soon, because they'll want to get you started on antibiotics early enough.
I test in 2 weeks, and I'm preparing myself for a positive. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be because I really really don't want an IV, and that's how my luck goes!

Re: Group B Test
I had Strep B in college- it caused a weird blue-ish rash all over my body..and was a mystery to the doctors for a while as to what was going on with me. I caught it from a guy I was dating- he was a carrier- he never had any symptoms. He also gave it to another girl he was dating- and she got the same weird rash. I am not sure if it is one of those things that if you have strep b- you always have it..or if you become a carrier..but I am very anxious to find out my results tomorrow. It is DEFINATELY something I dont want my baby to have to go through- if I even start any regular contractions..I will get my butt right to the hosptial to get my antibiotics!

Re: Group B Test
So, Kboogie, you did test positive? Or do they not bother testing you. Is it something that you will always have?

I couldn't find anything about whether or not you carry it forever either - I am going to ask the doc about that tomorrow.... I will let everyone know what they say!

Re: Group B Test
My OB said that you don't ALWAYS have it, it can come and go, thats why they test with every pregnancy (However Karen said they don't test her anymore), and my OB said its also the reason why they test you so late in the pregnancy, because it might not show up earlier but be there later, so they really just care whether you are positive around delivery time because of the risk of passing it to the LO without the drugs...
Re: Group B Test
I tested positive for GBS. Even though I tested neg for it for my first pregnancy. I am not too concerned about it.

I know it can come and go if you are a carrier..but I wonder if you actually have had it- not as a carrier..if it comes and goes.
